Hey, so here I am 40 miles of commuting ~ 5 miles/trip 2-3x 10-15 milers (long commutes for fun ~1 20-30 miler every other week.
I've done my first metric century(solo for fun), and full century.
I've got 6 weeks till the thick of CX season.(Series I prefer starts in october, another series starts sooner) 4 weeks till another century I was debating.
Given my lack of a clear goal. What should I be doing? Just keeping adding miles to long ride? Adding intensity? Doing sprints for CX benefits? I've never really "trained" besides some semblance of seat time and some semblance of intensity.

Did 30 this weekend, most of it was low effort (4/10), but threw in a a couple 300w 5 minute efforts(Strava measured)
Supposed to be hot this week, but will try to make tomorrows commute add up to 15 miles of 7/10ths effort.
When do I shave my legs?

damn, I load up on food for a ~50 miler lol. come at me. I make no assumptions about being able to find food anywhere. ~200 calories/hour or I'm going to have a bad time at some point for sure

So for you that 50 miler should be like 1200 calories?
I think I ate 3k+ during my century, lol.
I can barely make 90 minutes without food in all honesty

nah, unless thats a tee-hee comment [~18 mph is pretty normal for me w/light hills to avg w/stoplights], so like ~500 calories is plenty

I was pretty happy with myself this week, did 4000m elevation and was just shy of hitting 14 hours, not my best week but pretty good overall. Then I saw this...
https://www.strava.com/athletes/13284524 https://www.strava.com/athletes/4414579
50+ hours a week for the one dude and nearly half a million meters elevation gain in 2016 for the other guy. absolutely insane. i'm sure there are plenty of other examples

I was feeling good about 6 & 7 hours. (albeit in many small sections/lol mostly commute)
So based on advice, I'm now doing 30-40 sundays and at least one hard pace ride. However I'm probalby a bit more casual in my stop.go efforts of commuting(it has been high 90s in the afternoons) Given the difficulty of finding uninrupted road my 9/10s efforts will probably be a series of 5 minute intervals or 20 minuts effots.
I did find a 12 mile loop recently with no lights/stop signs, deadflat (good/bad I suppose). I may turn that into an training loop

Full report, lol dael with it.
Novice group, field of 17. about 9 members on one team, 3 on another, about 4-5 unaffiliated riders. One other NOOB like me. Most others seemed like they'd been doing most the season (weekly series). Nerves high.
Dead flat course, high 70s, low wind, glare was an issue due to late evening. 1.8m road race corse, back third had chicanes.
General vibe: Way scarier than CX. The speed, the closeness, the movements, the jockeying. I thought I'd be unflinchable, as for some reason I ride close all the time. Like I'm just agro I guess. I'd also say it was slightly easier in total, maybe due to short duration (6 laps,11.8mi for novice)
For first 1-2 laps I was towards upper 3rd, slowly got forced back by team dynamics. However by lap 4 the movements got increasingly erratic as people got tired and more aggressive. The large team was mostly functioning as a team, except for their weaker third. Despite still feeling mostly good I was slowly dropping back as I kept getting out of aero advantage. However I felt good and we were still a single pack. Last lap (6) on 1.9mi course and I didn't like my position so I worked myself up 2-3 spots before sharp corners. On corners the group started to split to 2 On sharp corners I did a couple inside passess to get to lead of rear group. Taking wind to face, but saw open field/no traffic through last corner. That set me up for a lot of speed on back .5mi sprint.
Luckily I make some power, despite having shitty aero(28mm tires on stock set-up gravel grinder, discs brakes, etc). Passing I mentally heard "grab a wheel" shouted by the team's coach. I'm thinking, give it a try...lol with about 150m to go I'm running out of steam. Deep onto hooks (back flat, maybe), powering still in saddle(Should I have risen?), I can hold speed but i"m not gaining much, can see there's no way I'll close last 10m on next guy so I let myself enjoy my pace.
Finished 3rd out of field. Like I said, last 1/2 lap I went from tail to that position. I should have made a move a little sooner. While my cornering is solid enough to made the moves I did I spend excess energy as the pack spread out in the corners and I was moving positions. I'm lucky I'm more powerful than this group. That said, my strategy for laps 1-4 was solid. A little better strategy at end and I could have move to vying for first.
Next year maybe cat 5?

More trying not to make a fools of myself thinking I could pull the pack. But also taking advantage of aero.
I was worried I kicked too soon/hard as I was blowing by everyone and couldn't quite believe it.
