yeah bike time has dropped - running, weights, etc right now

park the gears once last race concludes and stick to SS til season starts back up

which means 4hrs of SS in Texas a few times in Jan/Feb

*barf*

You are one masochistic bastard, shamrok.

I just cleaned/lubed/adjusted the drivetrain on the CS bike for tomorrow's session in the woods. Cloudy and 34-37 out tomorrow. Nice day for it.

I... I don't know why one would do this to oneself...

I'm almost convinced to do a race at the CX park on 1/11. I bumped into the dude who created the place (the one in that article I posted) and he just about convinced me to give it a try. I dunno. Coming in last might suck. Then again, I guess it would suck less than not trying it at all.

Reg'ed for that CX race.

Rode with a couple of the organizers today. Kicked my ass, but I think I can at least get through the 40 minutes without dying--I think.

The run-ups are fucking brutal.

Here's mine:

3404 miles of it was on the bike, the rest was running.

Was at the cross park for a couple of hours yesterday. Got caught in a snowstorm toward the end of things and it was awesome, beautiful riding. An excellent ride to kick off the year. \:\)

I'm starting to get the hang of the conditioning portion of CX. The run-ups aren't killing me like they used to. One of the people I rode with (she's one of the "creators" of the park) told me I wouldn't come in last in next week's race, which was reassuring. We'll see.

nice work in 2014 gamby!
work on carrying momentum through the corners so you dont slow down too much going in and then have to sprint out and waste energy. a lot of the new people will prob do this because of poor bike handling skills and blow up towards the end, where you come in and capitalize!

Thanks and thanks for the input! I have a lot of BMX experience from the 80's and MTB experience from the 90's/00's, so the bikehandling is actually where I'm hoping to gain a lot of time over the roadies who have never ridden offroad. \:\)

That said, earlier in the season, I took a few spills while going into corners too hot/sharply. That was when I was figuring out the bike, tho. Since it's built on a hybrid frame/fork, it's not very twitchy, which is nice.

One of the dudes I was riding with was all freaked out about riding his CX bike in that park and is debating using his MTB in Sunday's race.

I'm hoping the fact that I've ridden that park/course a ton now will help keep me from back of the pack, since I know where to pour it on and where to carry the bike.

I'm running platform pedals so I can get on and off the bike super fast. It's basically a big BMX bike now. I have too much trouble getting in and out of the SPDs in a pinch. With the platforms, I almost look like I know what I'm doing when I dismount.

You can see one of them in the pic

I can definitely feel the loss in power transfer, but I got used to that, along with my feet shuffling around a bit. I = phred.

I figure the time I'd lose fiddling with my SPDs along with potentially crashing in the hairy spots outweighed whatever the platforms cost me. Dare to be different, bruh. \:D

I'm not quite as scared of the anaerobic hell as I was a few weeks ago. I'm a bit more conditioned to it than I expected. That said, race pace is a different story altogether. Looks like the weather is going to be 32 and cloudy--perfect. \:\)

Have you tried the SH56 multi-release cleats: http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-SM-SH56-SP...ords=spd+cleats

For me they were the difference between "I feel like I always have a 10% chance of being stuck" to "I never feel like I can't get out when I really need to". Probably baby stuff, but I've never had a problem with them coming unclipped when I didn't want to, so they work great for me.

That's a good tip! No, I didn't know those even existed. Maybe next season when I buy a dirt-only pair of shoes (or retire my current ones to dirt use), I'll give 'em a try. \:\)

My hesitation stems from riding my MTB in snow last year and going down 3 times in one ride because I couldn't yank out of the pedals fast enough (at a loose setting).

Good point. My brain is so wired for SPD that's all I was thinking. Granted, I like having everything fully interchangeable.

Good shoe selection for the ATACs?

Providence is slated to go World Cup as early as next year.
http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/providence-edges-closer-to-bid-for-cyclo-cross-world-cup
As it is, it's the biggest CX event in the country, so it has some cache that might be able to get the UCI to forget about the Austin debacle. Cancelling CX because of mud is like cancelling football for cold.

That said, I rode my race yesterday. Fucking frigid 24 cloudy degrees and a snow-dusted course. 40 riders turned out in my group (Mens B), so 10 pussed out because of the cold/snow, as 50 registered. I came in 33, so I didn't come in last. I'll take it.

The platform pedals were a wise move for me. a) I had a big superman-style over-the-bars bail on the first lap when my front wheel hung up on a divot in a short drop. It held me up for maybe 30 seconds and I escaped with a banged-up elbow (mysteriously). Knocked my left lever back into place and forged on. If I were clipped in, that might have been a different outcome. b) I encountered a few people having pedal issues because of falls or clogging because of snow.

Pics:

Saturday pre-ride, upper part of the course:

One of the big drop-ins

Smiling here because that's where all of the hecklers/spectators were, so I cracked up every time I went by them. I caught a ration of shit for the camelbak (unsanctioned race) and the crowd shrieked with delight when my gears decided to hang up right in front of them. The hecklers were very specific and very creative.

Another random shot:

So yeah, we had the best CX event in the country yesterday.

yea I know "because pros do it" but watching some of that austin course on the web the last few days my amateur opinion is no way are cleats/clipins faster than platforms in that enviro /noob

and sidenote: wow that looks like ultra misery. I have no idea why they dont mtb those courses, esp after watching those austin downhill sections in the mud. not only would they of course run up all the hills theyd also have to run down all the descents. why not just make it a trail run carrying a bike? yay fun! and I'm sure the clipin performance after a couple laps is spectacular

While mud is part of the culture of CX, if you can barely ride the bike on the course, then there's a problem with the course design (i.e. someone should have thought "this won't be rideable in the mud".

As for the platforms--perfect for snow. I could get a foot down instantly instead of going down. Just as much as "the pros do it" is "I read on the internet that this is what you're supposed to do". For sure, some people would be better off riding platforms than SPDs in CX. I saw quite a few of them on Sunday.

no way would platforms be faster. how the hell would you even run the course with flat bottom shoes? mtb shoes have treads to run and even then austin was hard to run without slipping. the pros change their bike every lap or half lap so the pedals are cleaned out of mud. ever try using flats with wet, muddy shoes and try to pedal over bumpy ground...not efficient. props to gamby for using platforms though and making it work for him!

Thanks, mein. \:\)

Yeah, I think I'll relegate the camelbak to training and MTB in the future. I didn't use it much during the race--and it was a 40 minute race, I'll have you know! Granted, I was 35 minutes because I was off the lead lap.

As for the platforms, my trail shoes stuck to them pretty well. They have a nice sole tread pattern that works great on the run-ups. Keep in mind, they work for BMX'ers--I look at this bike as a big BMX bike with gears. My dismounts/remounts were lightning fast because of them, too (almost looked like I knew what I was doing ). I'll eventually go over to SPD, but in snow, I think the platforms are actually an advantage.

Stoked that I actually went through with it. Felt good to beat a few people on my POS bike.

No bike for home \:\(
Last year I didn't stop and rode indoors right through the winter. This year I haven't touched the bike since it got cold out. It's been a long time off the bike and it's going to be a rough month trying to get some of my legs back when I do finally decide to stop being lazy.

Nato, don't worry about all those dudes, they're probably posting on some other forum how they're worried about racing you!
