yea, and I know what 8.5 mph on a mtbike is like, and have no concept of 25-30 mph and bridging gaps and all that

I'll definitely agree to disagree with that one. 20 hours of anything will shut down most people. ...and those TdF bikes are 15 lbs, BTW.
I will say after riding my first bike yesterday in over a decade, hills absolutely SUCK. Granted this was mountain biking. But riding the flats at higher speeds weren't too bad.

Did a 4 hour relay race today. Due to the fact the course was only 1.3 miles long, opted to do a 2 man team with my buddy. Based on pre reg we thought we would clean house until we show up and 2 local pros (nick sears, ron harding) signed up day off. It was a le mans start, about 100 yards. I was starting first and at the gun we took off. I slotted into 2nd behind Nick but he had 10 seconds on my at the top of the first climb and 20 seconds on the first lap. I rode 4, 6:5X laps then tagged off to my team mate. Long story short, he slashed his tire, finished the lap, i went while he found a tube. I do my 4 laps, then tag him back in. slashes his tire again!!! i give him my bike to finish the lap, then hop on and go. He runs 20 min away to a bike shop while I tone it down and do a hour stint. In that time we slipped from 2nd to 3rd and were 2 min 30secs back from 2nd and 3 laps down on first (sears/harding). jason gets back the 3hr 15 min mark and we switch to two lap stints and hammer the fuck out of the course and come back and pull off a 2nd!

Ellsworth looking sexy

Get some!!!!

not a lot of photogs at some of our events, well I was one that would do it before I sold off all camera gear so I could just play with bikes.
from the paper - starting stretch was fast (think we got up to 29-30mph?) and hard pack at first and then dipped into about a 40ft sandpit before it returned to hard pack.
I had some bloody and bruised pinkies from this tree

nice pics! how did you do?
Knocked first nationals race out of the way today...most painful 30 minutes ive ever done on a bike. i went so hard my teeth fucking hurt when i was done. got called up 22nd out of 25, last row. managed to pass some people on the start and clawed my way to a 11th out of 25, about 2:40 behind the leader. it was 20 min + 3 lap race. ill let the strava pic do the talking about the sufferfest i enured. especially the 190hr avg for a half hour. pre rode the XC course for sat and crashed twice taking it easy. fuck. me.

Raced Super D today, got 11th So Saturday rolled around for the CAT1 and Pro XC races at the national championships and I was a nervous mess. I didnt really care about short track since i never raced it and same with super d. cross country was the race i wanted to do well in. The course is tough. it starts with a 2.5 mile climb to the top of the ski resort on super rocky singletrack, followed by even gnarlier rocks on the descent. Ive ridden the course previously in local series so i was hoping the hometown advantage would come into play. i was a little unsure of how i would do since ive done primarily ultra endurance races this year and not much XC. nevertheless, i had a high enough ranking to get a 12th place call up on the 2nd row. 8:02am the gun goes off and away we go under partly cloudy skies and a nice temp of about 65 degrees. i didnt get the best start i wanted but i made some moves on the climb. i had no idea where i was the whole race since we got mixed in the the class that started before us. all i knew was i had to push the whole race. The first time around went well, no mistakes, the climb didnt hurt that bad and i made it through heckle pit and the switchbacks without coming off the bike, which is the hardest part of the course. 2nd time around i kept passing people from the class that started in front of us but no one was passing me. i could see a few guys behind me, but they werent closing, so i kept pushing but tried to ride within myself a bit to save some for the end just in case. about midway down the 2nd lap i catch a kid in my age group, i asked to pass but then he picked the pace up and i couldnt get around. we cross the line side by side and start the last lap. well, i got a bit in front of him and i guess he saw my that had my class number markered on and he turned up the pace. we hammered the shit out of the climb, swapping positions a few times. towards the top i slowed a bit because i didnt want to crack and i figured id have a shot at him in the rocks. well we get to the rocks, i was tired, started making a few mental mistake and ate shit going across a wet wooden bridge. i bent my brake lever pretty good and that was all he needed. I rode as fast as i could to keep someone from catching me and kept telling myself, no mistakes. once i made it through heckle pit and switchbacks i knew i was home free. I started getting slight cramps 1Km to go but didnt get bad and i crossed the line in 4th. the guy i was battling with was 3rd, so for a little, i was in 3rd! i finished 6 min behind the winner and 2 min ahead of 5th. I was so pumped, i rode MY race just the way i wanted and gave it all i had without blowing myself up/minimal mistakes. so pumped.
this is how rocky this place is, pretty much everywhere except for the climb. this is from last years race. (not me)

Splits from today's ride. Usual 20-mile path out-and-back--flat with one 1-mile climb. Just about windless tonight, so I was able to put the hammer down.
Hopefully I can make it to Tuesday's TT.

It was a freak hit to head
Horrible.
On a lighter note, nato was right--I PR'ed tonight. Didn't break into the 35's, but a 36:09 for the 12:08 mile course put me over the magic 20mph avg mark for the first time. Times are starting to get respectable.
Was so stoked, I opted to do the brick and ran a 5k afterwards.
Splits:

It's in you. It just has to be uncovered. I'm 42 and I'm faster than I was 2 years ago. Keep at it.

(you forgot to blur your name out on strava)
what I'm thinking is I still can't avg 20.0 for 40k/25m aka not fit enough.
Bullshit. I still haven't. I think I'm gonna try the 17.5 mile flat portion of my regular path on Friday and see if I can finally do it. The best I've done there is ~19.5 IIRC. I just need to catch another low-wind day. AVERAGING 20 is a pretty herculean task, because you have to spend quite a bit of time at 23-24 to even it all out.
My TT is a bad example for average speed. A few decent climbs and then a few miles of fast descending that throw the whole thing off. Not a traditional TT layout because hilly RI.
Quads are pretty fried from yesterday's brick doe. No fallout from the run, which I'm STOKED about. I think I'm finally used to running (knock on wood).
