I did an 8 hour race solo last year and Emily was doing it tag team with her husband, who is fast as fuck. I passed her the first couple times I saw her out, then later near the end of the race she was coming up behind me so I let her in just before a climb I paced her for a bit but after 7 hours didn't have the gas to keep up.
90% of it is genetics. One of the mountain bike magazines talked about this years ago and had a pretty good quote. Something along the lines... You're either born a donkey or a thoroughbred. You can train and train and become a really fast donkey but no matter what you do you will always still be a donkey.
I've accepted the fact that i'm a donkey.

Yea I'm ok with how I did...in UCI races they want the winners done in about an hour and 30 min, so at Bonelli I lasted an hour and winner was hr 43 due to mud, and sea otter I was hour 10 and winner was hour 23, so I think that's fairly respectable. Plus starting towards the back there's no way to catch the lead guys and everyone you stage with is around the same speed so you don't gain much anyways. Pretty much where you start is about where you'll finish +\- 5 spots or so. The weather was a slight issue as it was 85 and sunny and no humidity..coming out of the east where it snowed 3 days after i left...course has 0 shade which didn't help..was hard to breathe since my mouth was so dry
Give my some aero bars on the mtb and I might be able to TT faster than you

Been so damn busy with work, I haven't taken the time to check in forever. Looks like it's BAO central, anyway.
So here's my new bike. Holy shit, I love it. WAY faster than the old setup--the aero actually does something.
Came in at a hair over 18 lbs with cages and pedals.

swim: smooth as fuck/easy #10/56 AG, did a 34:nn or 1:45 per 100m pace aka warmdown speed bike: 20-30 mph and gusty winds all day, 56 miles w/3500' vert. I hit a headwind the first 13 miles that humbled the shit out of me [observed 12 mph for a couple miles on a flat section into the wind which crushed my spirit]. Avg'd 16.9 mph, #20/56 in AG run: what wasn't broken of my spirit quickly became broken as the first 2 miles off the bike my lower back was screaming at me from holding aero tuck for 3+ hrs the first time in my life. My legs were so rubbery the first couple steps off the bike I considered cashing it in right there. Then the trail run started and whatever was left of my spirit broke on mile 5 of the half marathon and the 10% grade there on the trail. I picked up the pieces after groveling/shuffling through the rest of the ~1500' in climbing on the run and finally started running again around mile 9 for good. Got flashed with co-ed boobs not once but 4 glorious times , closed out the half marathon with a 9:30 mile, 9:00 mile, 8:30 mile and a 7:45 with my left hamstring threatening to crash me at any moment and my right quad picking up a compensating cramp. 2:12 half marathon was pretty sad in my AG for like #30/56. Overall #22/56 I was thoroughly owned and humbled and had no idea how hard it would be nor how different my race results would be from my gameplan. Gameplan was a sub 3H bike, sub 2H run, and a cruising swim, finish around 5:45, HAHAHA. I went 6:19 tho which I guess isn't terribly sad for a tough course. I just thought I was a better biker than this but apparently not. I knew the run was going to suck. I guess thats just another way of restating that I was thoroughly humbled. Oh well back to the drawing board.
As an example of where I was post race I was asking for Valium instead of what they had in the food area(s), I asked multiple vendors if they had any hookups on painkillers lol cry.

Alright, How do I go from gravel-grinder/commuter to racing?
Just show up on my 32mms, spds, and shoes with treads and get my ass handed to me?
Shave my legs for guaranteed MPHs?
/waits for stickaz to tell me to buy a new bike/N+1

I'm doing a "classic" this Saturday--Rhodekill--a road ride with dirt road segments. Most are riding on straight-up road bikes, but on the pre-ride, there were 10 punctures. I'll be going slower on my cross bike on 35's. A bud will be on his gravel bike on 32's. I MIGHT run 25's and be careful, but I DGAF about speed on this one.
On a straight road ride, 23-25's will be lightyears faster. I've never tested to see how fast my cross bike is on 25's. It would weigh in the 19 lb range, but wouldn't have the aero of my roadie, which does a shitload in the speed dept.
Go ride and have fun.

I did OBRA races (CX) last year on my bike (gravel), but i ran CX tires.
Stock 30s are tough, but the combo of heavy tires and heavy/shitty wheels effect the "feel"
I definitely suffer from "fred"/n+1 syndrome. I'm reasonable fit, but not very experienced, and it's hard to know how much a more pedestrian bike affects my abilities.
When i rode a true road bike (CF Tarmac) I could feel the performance difference. It's funny, I thought my gravel bike was a rocket coming from my commuter MTN-bike, and road was that same level further(and I had bag on that bike with 6lbs of crap on it).

Do tt bikes have a bigger chain ring, even on my "big" tires, I was starting to up cadence on medium steep hills. I wasn't spinning, mainly because I just accepted the opportunity to rest. Just seemed inefficient.
Here's what's ahead of me btw. (not a race obviously) http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/985134395

standard cranks are standard on TT bikes, compact cranksets on CX IIRC, road bikes are a mix. Eg if nato a standard crankset, if Fred... compact :p
on 'nasty' grade at wildflower for example a popular topic in the mid-pack around me was 'hey bro what cassette u runnin dawg' heh
http://www.bikeradar.com/us/road/gear/article/what-is-a-compact-crank-38845/
*completely open to the possibility that I have this assbackwards lol
but certainly, a standard crankset with a 11/12 tooth final gear in the cassette = plenty of overhead for ~100 rpm pedaling around 45 mph

Compact gearing 50-34 CX gearing (when not a 1x11) 46-36 (mine's 46-34)
I run out of courage before I run out of gearing.
My 50/12 gets pretty spun out at 40mph and that's honestly fast enough for me. I'm way more concerned about getting up the hills more quickly.
Lighter tires (Continental GP4000sII are fantastic and puncture resistant) and lighter wheels are what really wakes up a bike, but obviously a 15-16 lb racer will be more lively than a 23 lb gravel bike.
I'm never going to be crazy fast, so a lot of it is moot to me. With a bunch of mechanical advantages, I'm struggling to be a mid-packer.

ok thats right... 45 mph is 120 rpm [53x11] for 700c, so basically out of gear at/around/just over 40 imo
this may be my shaved legs and aero helmet speaking, but I've never given 2 fucks about how much the bike weighs, it all seems to be aero dependent [bike speed on the other side of 20 mph]

I saw the aero light (no pun) on my new roadie setup. It's pretty shocking.
