My grass exactly 1 year ago. It gets out of control quickly if you don't stay on top of it due to the Milorganite. This is cut at max mower height as you can see the grass bending over.

I was contemplating about Milorganite and if it was worth it, looks like I don't have a choice. Great looking lawn guys!

TY, how much peat moss did you throw above your seed? Did you ever use Scott's patch master as LCN does near the edges of the driveway etc? Great to see the amazing results, hoping I can get there soon.

Milorganite improves the soil not just the grass. Plus it has iron which helps the appearance and greening. It's the best.

I've only used peat moss and have had only great results. 1/4" or 1/2" is enough. Water every morning, try to use something to measure how much water you're putting down. I put 1/2" daily when seeding.

I just bought some 2-4,D for the weeds, I hope it's not too late to put it down. Dandelions are out of control.

Wait until there's no rain in the forecast for 48 hours. I'll be hitting my parents lawn on Monday. Supposed to have decent weather next week.

As long as you have decent amount of grass you're okay, but if your grass is really patchy & bare, it's better to overseed, topsoil, fertilize, wait for it to grow & then kill the weeds.

Because if you kill the weeds first, then you gotta wait 4 weeks to plant any seed & by then it'll be too hot for any seed to grow leaving you with a patchy lawn for the rest of summer.

Now if it's just weeds along with the grass and it's all pretty decent just spray the killer.

So it really depends on your current condition.

I'm going to get out today and see how many of the weeds I can get rid of myself. Probably hold off on the weed killer as it's a bit to late.

I'd double check with google, but I'm 90% sure thats all there is to it.

Lawn is looking GREAT this year. Not one weed to be found... yet. I just wish it was a deeper green. The neighbour has a lawn guy, he does her lawn, and a 1.5foot stripe down my front lawn... now I have a dark green 1.5foot stripe that I can't seem to match. I fertilize and all that, too. Looks fucking awful.

You need to use a fertiliser with iron in it to get that deep green.

This.

The main issue with your lawn is it's thinned out too much, so you need a shit ton of seed & then cover all the seed with top soil (1/4 inch at least). Any fertilizer will work just make sure you follow the instructions on the bag. Then water everyday for 2 weeks.

Costco has a big bag of Scotts sun & shade grass seed.

Oh, use a spreader don't do it by hand.

This. The only variation I'd do is top soil, shit load of seed and peat moss on top.

The weather is looking cool and rainy the next little while. I'd get on it now and keep on watering throughout the summer if it gets really hot.

looking at the weather it looks like we are getting consistent rain in the next week or two.
if you have the time, do this wednesday. temps and rain will help it grow.

what i did is in a big bucket mix the seed and topsoil by hand then lay it down. wildouts way is faster.

spreader the fert. seed go nuts.

fert also promotes weed growth, but dont get discouraged. get the grass growing first and kill weeds later.

Scott's turf builder and top soil?

That product is the biggest waste of money. You can make your own "turf builder" with a bit of peat moss, soil and grass seed all in one shot.

Yup.

I use whatever top soil, black earth, peat moss is on sale/cheapest. Any will work, you're just using it to protect the seed from the birds eating it all and to slightly level out the low spots. The fertilizer will be doing the main work of providing the lawn with nutrients.

I friggin love peat moss, took TY's suggestion and the lawn is growing out like crazy.

I also started measuring out my fertilizer the way the LCN does it to ensure proper fertilization. Glad I started doing that because the "spreader settings" instructions on fertilizer bags sucks balls. Aim for anywhere from .75-1 lbs of N/1000 sq. ft.

Dennis, make sure the fertilizer you use for seeding has phosphorus in it (the middle number). Phosphorus is important for growing roots.

From what I've seen Scott's Turf Builder Max has the highest amount of iron of the bags I've checked at 5%. Milorganite is listed at 2.5% so you would technically have to throw down twice the amount of Milorganite to achieve the same dosage as Turf Builider.

That being said Milorganite loads the soil with a better slow release nitrogen that won't burn the lawn and throws down a lot of great food to help other organic matter grow in your soil and has a better type of iron that is more easily consumed by the grass.

People spend $15 a sf to get interlock patios but can't spare $1.5 for new lush sod?
