Just got 18+" of snow today. Temps in the teens for the next 7 days. Looks like I'll be on the trainer for much of February.

I managed to ride in the snow on the cross bike for an hour on Sunday. I think I'm around 100 miles outside for the month (haven't added it up yet).

Gonna sign up for a 43 mile road/dirt ride (Rhodekill Classic) at the end of March. Should be fun.

I've done ~75 total.

Another foot of snow last night and no sign of anything melting anytime soon.

I did ~6 miles today. At 10 degrees, 5" of fresh powder, with 5psi in the tires. Fuck riding the trainer!

Ah, I don't have a mileage counter on my trainer, so I just do it by time. In that case, I'm on my trainer 3 hours a week. I've been good about doing hard interval sessions each time.

JT--badass in getting out there at 10F! I'm jealous of the fatbike, but the snow here is too deep for even a fatbike. I'd have to find some groomed XC ski trails.

nice!
I'm at like 120-130 miles YTD lol. Basically its down so much because I changed my cleats/shoes/pedals and still dont have it right. My left knee is hurting a bit so I dont want to do too much until I get it right.

I think its as simple as my seat being about a half inch too high now [my former shoes were mtb clipless so they sit a bit harder than the tri shoes I swapped to]

RAD.

BTW--I still have that July 11 race in MA in my phone's calendar and I'm going to try to keep it open in case you need me to crew for you.

Meanwhile, we've had one thaw day which didn't do much. Snowing a few inches tonight after a couple of days in the teens. I'm stuck on the trainer for at least another 2 weeks. Praying for a warm week by mid-March to do some serious melting.

I've been doing some hard intervals on the trainer with the mindset of "this will make me faster".

so I had a "Eureka" moment with my left knee [new tri shoes, cleats and pedals]

and realized that not only was the pedal somewhat lower than the old SPDs but that the shoe itself is lower too [mtb clipless had much bigger sole]

so I dropped the seat about 1.25" or so. Probably overshot. Now my knee hurts on the top of the knee by the quad AND I can still feel a little twinge on my outer knee/left hamstring tendon behind/beside the knee

I chock that up to 'I hurt it a bit so its still gonna feel funny for a while', probably need to bring the seat up about 0.5" from here and then slide it back a hair [or forward lol not sure]

#nailedit

so I think I found the problem and am getting closer to fixing it

As much as I hate the whole internet "Z0MG you need a $400 fitting before you even look at your bike!!!11!" thing, maybe getting looked at for seat position/height might not be a bad idea. If you have "bro status" at an LBS, they might not even charge for it (if you bring a 6-pack/food).

I moved my saddle forward in the rails and now I can have it parallel to the ground, where I used to have it pointing down. Getting a new saddle soon, doe--current one gets uncomfortable after 50 miles.

sit on the saddle with the cranks in the 12 and 6 position. on the one in the 6 position, put your heel on the pedal. if your leg is bent, raise saddle, if you cant reach or have to rock your hips, lower saddle. if your legs is juuuust about or right at full extension, you got it

in my uber-scientific guess-n-check method I raised the seat ~0.5" and moved it forward ~0.5"

in the aerobars I was crusing 19+ on some segments on the ride back in the dark and my knee felt good. I dare say I nailed it. I was fully thinking I was just simply slower now because of running too much or not biking enough or who knows

the entire year I've been limiting my speed because my damn left knee would hurt if I pushed it [sad to admit this]

I was even mostly mtbike commuting because of it

That Avatar looks like the shape that has worked well for me in other "heavier" saddles. I need something in the 145-150mm range. I have a skinny ass, but my sit bones are wide. I get raped by a 130mm saddle.

I don't know how you ride road in that. With no wind, it's no biggie in the woods, but on the road? Fuh dat shihhh

I'm still putting off today's impending 1.5 hour trainer sesh.

More snow coming tomorrow. I seriously don't foresee many miles in March. This sucks.

Killin' it, nato.

The thaw has finally started here, but the roads are sketchy to run on, nevermind ride on.

My most frequently-used path doesn't get plowed. I have to look in the the other one. I'm thinking the frost heaves this year are going to be a nightmare (on the paths and on the roads).

I still don't think I'll be out there by end of March. We'll see.

https://youtu.be/EdSEsvJMBG0 suggest watching on mute sound is borked and I'm too lazy to upload a fixed replacement right now.

small sampling of what we get to race on this weekend. relatively short distance (even cat 2 ~ 12 mi)... But this place abuses you badly. Two laps and I feel it the next day.

Looks like a really nice trail, though. The climbs look brutal, and a few really rocky sections, but it doesn't look as treacherous on film.

The woods around here are a lot more dense, for the most part. Cool to see singletrack with that much elbow room.
