Focal point vs depth of field is where you messed up. The first picture it looks like the focal point is on the jeans of the front girl. The plane is parallel to the camera so since it's tilted it goes through her jeans and misses her face. With a low # on the f stop (like 4.0) the DoF is smaller. You could have gone to say 8.0 but then your shutter would be lower...

2nd and 3rd pic looks like your focal point was on the edge of the barn door.

edit - when photoing people, I was told to always put the focal point on the eyes or face. For the first and last pics, the face, the 2nd (being closer) then her eyes.

For the 1st and 3rd picture. Could OB1 have opened up the aperture and then put the focal point on the barn door directly between them? The barn door would be in focus then, but with a big enough aperture, so would the kids.

Yeah going any more open he'd need more light as the pictures as is need more light. Without a bunch of external lights/flashes OB1 would really have to just choose one girl as the focal point and let the other be outside the depth of field.

I just checked his exif data on the first shot and it was at f/4.5. At the distance the girls are apart, it's either shoot in the center (which he did) and deal with neither in the focal plane... Or choose one and go with it....

first try at the northern lights, using my g/f's rebel T3

I need to get myself a tripod and work on focusing the night sky better. The lights were absolutely insane over my apartment earlier, hoping I got something worthwhile on my film camera. This shot is from a few miles outside of town, still a ton of light pollution unfortunately (not that it would help much).

There's pretty much endless photos to take once you get up high. I'm hoping to find some different stuff here...maybe this weekend. Sand dunes? Not sure.

thankfully, most of the smoke is gone for now.

Right on man.

Honestly the haze/smoke was one of the reasons I liked that shot so much haha. It adds a lot of character and IMO is much more interesting than the "clean" shot.

Most of the interior shots were two gel'ed YN-560 II's and an LP-160 on the subject. Used a flashbender to flag it from the camera.

Right on Adam, I like this. I agree the crop could be tighter, the most interesting part of the shot is all on the left side and center. Another thing you could do is just darken the right side significantly so your attention doesn't get drawn there as much.

Just a fun edit of an old favorite. This is the first time I've used selective areas of color in a B&W photo. Normally I really dislike using that technique, but I think it's too cool to pass up here.

My hard drive crashed last week and in the process of setting up my new hard drive I went through a lot of my old photos. That lit a bit of a spark and motivated me to set up my photo workstation (photo monitor and Wacom) for the first time since moving to Madison last fall. I don't have a lot of time to get out and photograph these days, but it feels good to be messing around in Photoshop again. Even if it's just re-working old material.

And as an aside, if your computer is running slowly and working on large files is a drag, consider buying an SSD. I bought a 256gb Samsung SSD for ~$200 and it's made an absolute world of difference. Everything just flies. And if you have a larger HDD for all your photos/videos/etc you can get away with buying a much smaller SSD and only loading your operating system and programs on it. Probably old news, I'm not much of a tech geek, but I thought I'd pass it along just in case.

Funny you mention your computer crashing... Had a bad sector on my HDD last week, Windows wouldn't boot. Bought a 256GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD and a 1TB WD Passport.. Talk about a performance improvement, PS loads in 2-3 seconds

Congrats on joining the SSD crowd but why are you just now joining the SSD crowd? It's like single handily the best step forward in performance for a long while in computers.

Nice edit, Eric.

I still don't have an SSD on either of my six year old computers. I'm at a why bother stage at this point.

Like I said, I'm not much of a tech geek. I knew SSDs were available in newer computers but I thought their main benefits were durability and shock resistance. I wasn't aware a new hard drive could make a difference in performance, I thought that was solely a ram/processor function, so the idea of replacing/upgrading my HDD never crossed my mind. Instead I remained blissfully ignorant long enough for SSD prices to drop to reasonable levels.

My HDD crashing has turned out to be a plus in many ways

Apparently your definition of fine vs mine is different, lol. Now that you've seen the performance increase, hopefully your definition of 'fine' has been revamped. ;\)
