had my 10 mile ITT this morning for my stage race. came in 28th out of 48 with a time of 23:26.21 seconds and a average speed of 24.7 mph. pretty happy with that considering i only had aero bars on the bike and i did no TT training before this. in fact,ive only done one road race this year. rest was mtb. winner was 20:41.xx which is stupid fast for CAT4. just couldnt hang with guys on full tt rigs. heres the garmin data

Nato - is the route turn after turn(looks like one main turn, but I saw the pics from your previous races)? I can't turn fast at all...I'm so lanky, tall and uncoordinated that I hit the brakes hitting tight turns lol. You're a beast!

I rode 40 miles today at about a 17 MPH pace.

Riding hills again on Monday with a friend. Not sure how far we're going. TT again on Tues, so I hope to not fry my legs on Monday.

Mounted up an old (but still mint) Michelin Axial Carbon tire on my rear wheel today, after my flat fiasco on Thursday. I'm STUNNED at how worn that tire was (a cheapo Kenda Kadence, that I figured would last WAY more than 1000 miles, since I assumed cheap tires were rock hard). The damn thing was paper thin in spots while the front was almost unscathed. Go figure.

I might go Gatorskins for the next set, since tires get pretty cut-up on the roads around here. I was interested in the Kenda Kountach (200g, flat resistant), but we'll see if I can get my hands on a set.

thanks! not bad for just a road bike with clip on aero bars \:D i prob could have broke the 25mph barrier, but seeing as i never did a TT effort of this length i wasnt sure how i would do and i didnt want to burn myself out to early and have nothing at the end. i did the race at 92% of my max hr though. i def need a tt bike now. that was mad fun and now i want to go faster!

had the crit today too. 40 minutes. was def the hardest crit i had done. had a nice little climb in it between t3 and t4 which shredded the field. i had 679 ft of climb in 15.35 miles IN A CRIT. they are supposed to be flat! plus it was windy which didnt help. i hung mid pack for a while, then slipped to the back and hung on there till 5 to go. lost touch a bit and chased with 2 other guys. managed to hold a small gap but couldnt close it. lost touch completely with 2 to go and cruised home to the finish. the 28th in the TT and the 20th here put me 24th overall GC out of 48

Turns are the funnest part of being on a road bike! There are certain roads/paths I ride where I can bomb through some S-turns and it's awesome. Pick a line as I would in auto-x/track and get the braking done before the turn (same as a car). The lean takes a bit of a leap of faith, though. Feels great when it's done nicely.

final race today, 54 mile road race. my longest road race to date by 14 miles. was very fast, 23.9 avg. i hung in the pack the whole race and positioned myself top 10 with 5 miles to go. then my legs cramped with 2 mile left. FUUUUUU! i rode through it and managed to finish the sprint in the field. i was scored as 20th, but 15-22 all shared the same time, so lets say i tied for 15th \:D 54 miles in 2 hours 15 min and 44 seconds. ill take that seeing as its my only road race ive done all year. i should finish around 20th overall GC out of 48

do you cramp often or was this a one time thing from really pushing yourself?

I used to always get bad cramps when I did 8 and 24 hour races. The cramps always came in the final laps near the end of the race, I suspect constant on and off the bike in a relay style had something to do with it. Anyways, I started taking sportslegs and salt tabs and i've been cramp free for quite some time now, the two combined work wonders.

ive only cramped one other time this year and that was in that 40mile mtb race that took me almost 6 hours to do. i think its a result of hard efforts for such a long time. before this weekend ive only done one other road race this year and it was a crit, so i havent had any races/rides at this level of intensity for so long. i used NUUN electrolyte tabs on saturday for the tt and crit and had no cramping in those hard efforts, but i opted for gatorade for the sugar for the road race since NUUN is sugar free. both times i cramped i was drinking gatorade, so i def think thats part of the issue. i was properly hydrated before so thats not the issue i think. even though im not on and off the bike as in a relay, i think the constant change from hard effort to coasting to soft pedaling to coasting to hard effort in the peloton during races has an effect on me as well. but like i said, this was my longest RR by 14 miles and i hung in it until the end even fighting the cramps off after primarily mtb racing all year so im satisfied with how i did in my first stage race. there was a lot of sandbaggers too. the dude who won overall GC was 35, did a 10 mile tt in 20 minutes, won the crit, and pulled the peloton along at 24 mph for over half the race. no way that guy should be a 4. he would be competitive in cat2. there was more then one like that too. oh well. had fun \:D

heard good things about sport legs, will have to look into it for cross season

Interesting. My legs (hamstrings) were just on the verge of cramping on the final killer hill at my 65 of my 71-miler from Thursday. I know I was a bit dehydrated, though (using diluted Powerade & diluted Gatorade along w/ plain water).

The only other time I dealt with massive cramping (still the hamstrings) was at the end of 85 hilly miles on a hot MS150 leg. My body definitely doesn't like heat and prolonged exertion.

Rode 30.54 miles in 2:08:55 with my bud Phin yesterday.

Slayed my TT PR again tonight. Was hoping to break the 47 min mark and I blew by it with a 46:15 for an 18.53mph average speed. I climbed like a montherfucker tonight. Felt good to pass some faster people in the climbs.

Clearly, riding super hilly terrain has benefited me greatly.

Thanks. Definitely feels good to see some concrete progress being made. Too bad the season will end and I'll have to start over again in the spring.

BTW--speaking of Mr. Mom's Roo--there was a chick there last night with a badass Quintana Roo. Flat black and pink with pink bottle cages and bar tape. Not manly, but the thing looked fantastic. Lots of sick tri bikes are ridden at this TT.

dont stop over winter. buy a trainer and ride indoors. join the gym and ride the stationary bike and do leg exercises to increase your power. anything is better then just stopping. hell i didnt ride for 3 months over winter cuz im stupid. instead i ran and i came back in the spring and was at about 90% of where i was when i stopped. of course im 25 so that might have a bit to do with it,being "young" yet, not sure how old you are. def not my plan for this year though lol

I'm 40 (see my "kicking 40 in the balls thread). I have a trainer and I used it a ton last winter. I also managed to put in a good number of road miles because last winter was abnormally mild. I might take some spin classes this winter, too.

That said, I just think it's gonna be tough to maintain this level of fitness over the winter. I might be in the best shape of my life right now.

Looking forward to hearing the post-game.

I blasted another PR today, although not in an organized event. One of my regular bike path loops is 17.64 miles from the main parking lot in Cumberland RI to the opposite parking lot in Woonsocket, RI and back. Earlier in the season, I had the pipe dream of doing this loop in under an hour. The closest I came was 1:03. I haven't ridden there in awhile, so I decided to tackle it today, with all of these hilly TT's under my belt:



Ta-DOW.

18.84mph average. I used to kill myself to do a high 16 mph average there. That average meant I was holding 20-22mph for long stretches on this mostly flat course. Headwind was a slight factor on the way out, which took 29:41. Once I saw that I was sub-1/2 hour at the turnaround, it was game on. The tailwind really helped on the way back.

Strictly a personal accomplishment that no one else on the path even knew I was going for, but I'm fucking stoked about it. I'm finally getting faster. \:\)

Did 70 kms today at a sweet trail in Michigan at near race pace, my time actually puts me within the top 10 on strava. Did 95% of the trail in the big ring to get my strength up. I've always been a spinner because of my bum leg but after the last 2 local MTB races I realized I need to improve my stand up and mash the pedals ability. Leaving for whistler in two weeks to shred the brown pow, hopefully being off the cross country bike for 8-10 days doesn't hurt me to much.

Yeah, hard to argue with a clock. I like how concrete it is. \:\)

32.01 miles in 1:51:45 today. Average speed of 17.19mph and I could have pushed quite a bit harder if I wanted to. Nice ride, although the rear gears on my restomod Trek were being cunty today. I have to investigate at some point.

Felt like shit 3/4 into tonight's TT after the final big climb. Lost a lot of power in my legs and got a bit light-headed. I don't think I ate enough beforehand and had a mini bonk. Still threw down a 46:35 (:20 off of PR) but the last few miles were MISERABLE. \:\(

Rather than read this whole thread can you guys point me in the right direction?
I just got back into mountain biking and probably dust off my road bike soon or at least put it on the trainer.

So my question is... with my weight lifting/Crossfit and running(trying) where do I fit the bike/trainer in my schedule? Not counting the days I go mountain biking on the weekends. I'm still trying to get back in shape but I'm planing to lift weights probably 3-4 times a week, short running sessions/drills/technique(i suck at running) 2 times a week, 1 long run once a week(5 miles. long to me), also Olympic lifting and gymnastics once a week.
Any thoughts?

I eventually want to sign up for a nooby bike race.

Lol, thanks man. Based on that bottle of Gatorade on my bars, I was still in the first 20 miles of the bike, which means I was still pissed about having a flat as soon as I jumped on the bike in T1. That ate up the 15 minutes I'd gained on 90 percent of my age group on the swim.

As for the position....I wish I could have stayed that way for more of the ride. god damn those Kentucky rolling hills!

Do it! Anybody in halfway decent shape can finish one in the 17 hour cutoff with some very basic training. Since most of them sell out when registration opens the day after the race for the next year....it gives you a long time to build up a good base, learn to swim, whatever.

I'm now toying with doing a shorter tri in the future. Over the weekend I swam laps in a pool for 1:05 without any real effort. If I got used to running again, I'm basically there.

Well, I'd have to be able to do all of it in the same day, but still. The majority of people who ride at my local TT are tridorks, so I might join TriNE.org(?) and see what's up locally.

A friend of mine from CT is also looking to get into it, so I might have someone to pair up with. This is all a vague future goal at this point. Right now, I'm more focused on riding a century in a few weeks--I haven't committed yet...
