LNXGUY - awesome composition it is a shame that the light wood of the oar is being detroyed by the sun and shows up as an overexposed highlight.
Some PS folks maybe able to "fix" it but I would just destroy everthing that is good about the shot trying to recover the detail in the oar.

I have a few other similar shots where the oar shows up a lot better. That's the problem when the oar is clearcoated, it redirects sunlight like fucking crazy.

I bet it wouldn't be that bad. Open the raw file once in ACR and get what you've got here, then open it again (while this is open in regular ps) and the second time adjust exposure and anything else needed for just that oar (and you might be surprised how much info is actually there) and then send it on to PS too. Once back in PS, select all of the oar corrected file and paste it in to the original which PS will automatically do as a layer. Add a mask to the top layer and paint in everything but the oar - maybe playing with the opacity of the mask along the edges and near the water.
Essentially, it's HDR minus any of the stupidness (Halos and weird transitions) that normally goes with it.

This brings out the grain detail a lot better in the oar.. Not much I can do about the handle though, it's a lost cause..

I don't think his SD780 IS shoots in RAW.
Here's a snap I took as an example for Bill since he just ordered his nifty fifty.

So, I'm working on the project for work, and need to take some specific scenery photos. Too bad I only have a D50, but we'll make it work.
The shots are all taken at ISO 1600, f/10, and 30s shutter.  Oh, and the only thing I did to the photos in photoshop was stitch them and give them just a quick levels adjustment to darken the night sky.
I'm not posting these for quality. Just because I found this cool spot on the side of 95 that's abandoned because the worked the new highway around this section.

these are cool in their eerie emptiness. Why did you jack the ISO up when using a tripod (though really, the noise isn't intrusive)?

It's super noisy at full-res. I had the ISO that high because I needed to shoot at f/10, and ISO 800 was still too dark even at 30s exposure. It was cloudy, no moon, and the road basically had 0 light.

You don't think it would be bad to take out the trees on the top of the adjacent bank? I like the fact that it shows you at how deep of a canyon it is..
You are more then welcome to do whatever you want with it though, I like seeing what other people would do to my pics.

The white sky definitely makes it a bit boring. Try running a high-pass (duplicate the layer, filter>Other>High pass 1.5-2 px, set layer blend to overlay). A quick levels adjustment would also greatly help.

Good point.

I used a sky from one of my shots (had to try 3 before I found one that felt ok) and then messed with a few things and sharpened slightly.
