I was going for a high fstop number to make the lizards face clear, but everything else blurry.. I've realized that because I was so fucking close, it was useless to use that high of a fstop anyhow, lol..
I also just ordered this..
David Busch's Canon Eos Rebel Xs/1000d Guide To Digital Slr Photography.
Should be here in a few days.
Tried capturing a few of these little fuckers today, the bodies turned out ok

I don't care how much he loves himself, as long as he can teach me a thing or two I'll be happy

edit - Nice deer. Catching animals looking at the camera is more advice I'm remembering.
We were posting at the same time.
I deleted a shitty pic and it threw the thread off. My bad.
There are some baby birds in the back yard. I have a ton of pics, but am just going through them. Never found them that interesting until I tried a telephoto lens.

It was funny behind the lens, too. Can someone photoshop some domos chasing the bird?
Yes, I'm using the 70-200mm F4. Got the location from a buddy:

ok, so i was shooting today w/ 2x 500ws monoblocks on 1 vagabond II pack, and for the most part, after i pop one shot, one of the lights would turn off. i'm guessing b/c of the fast recycle time of my lights, it's drawing so much juice right after the pop that one of em simply shuts off. might need to get another VBII. do you have that problem?

Scott, wait until you see the image build of this one, it's a doosey Lots of time goes into these kind of shots, but I still am rarely 100% satisfied with the results. Each time I learn something new from my mistakes.
Andrew, your vagabond *may* be faulty. As I understand it, the fast recycle setting just recharges faster and hence the battery is drained quicker because of that. Being on fast vs slow should not cause any more power to be drawn at the time of the flash, so why one of the lights is powering off is beyond me. Does this ever happen if you just plug the light into a wall? Is it always the same light that shuts off? I use my 2 600ws lights at full power on a regular basis, but on slow recycle. I honestly have never tried it on fast because a with a car it doesn't really make a difference weather the recycle time is 15 seconds or 2 seconds...
The battery pack DOES get noticeably "loaded down" I guess you could call it, like it sounds like it's about to die but it doesn't... I would suggest seeing if you can recreate the issue with the lights plugged into a wall to see if its a problem with the vagabond or the lights themselves.

Hmm interesting. What lights are you using? I do know the vagabond is *technically* sold as (I don't know their exact words) "not for use with anything other than alien bees" BUT that's not to say they won't help you trouble shoot.

Yea here it is:
The Vagabond II is designed specifically for powering Paul C. Buff, Inc.™ products and we cannot make any claim for suitability with products from other manufacturers, nor can we accept any liability for any damage that might be caused to such equipment. We will, however, warranty the Vagabond II itself as well as any Paul C. Buff, Inc.™ equipment it powers.
I think this means they will replace/repair the vagabond itself if it is damaged, but they will not provide compensation for other products damaged BY the vagabond... If you approach them in the right way, they will help you trouble shoot regardless, I have heard only good things about PCB's customer service
If not, might be time to use that student discount for some 8a's

8a fffffFFFFF$$$$$$UUUUUUU
i'm using the D1 500ws blocks. i think i might just end up getting another VBII and shoot 1 light per. $270 is way cheaper than any profoto battery setups. even the Acute B 600 battery pack setup is expensive b/c it only has 1 head outlet...ends up being more expensive than 7b pack & 2 heads.
EDIT: looks like profoto came out w/ their own battery pack. even w/ a discount, the AB setup is a great bargain http://www.mac-on-campus.com/Store/Products/Lighting_On-Location-Devices/Profoto/BatPac/BatPac.aspx

Yea that is not really worth it IMO...
http://www.innovatronix.com/explorerXT.asp
I'm considering picking up one of these guys myself so I can start using my older not fancy but more powerful Bron Primo heads outdoors. For my uses, I can run up to 2400 w/s through it on slow. (maybe more? worst that can happen is you blow the fuse while testing) And if you're using fast recycle, you should still be able to run 1000w/s through it with no problems.

Also, just google "pure sine wave inverter" if you want to geek out for a while lol. There's a LOT of DIY solutions out there for even greater capacity if needed, trade offs are larger size and heavy weight for the most part.

Ooof, okay. Here's the short version... Basically my thinking with this set is to try and keep the car dark. It would be much easier to go into the studio, "surround and drown" the car and call it good. A lot of car studio photography is actually very boring looking. The guys bring the car in, throw it under the bank, blast the shit out of it and go home. The nature of a photo cove is such that it's hard to take a "bad" photo unless you're a complete moron. It's much harder to take a car into a room where you are literally surrounded by white reflective surfaces... And try to make it dark. It's hard to explain, and I am not shitting you when I say that this is the most demanding shoot I have ever done.
My answer to this problem of keeping it dark in a white room is to use very controlled lighting. Snoots, grids, barn doors, cine foil, black foam core and fabric... And in Photoshop, layer layer layer layer layer layer layer layer layer! lol. The setup pictured above is in essence, only for the side of the car. To be 100% honest, the other lights were turned on for show/behind the scenes/blog purposes to provide general fill light for illustrative purposes. I will gladly share the final image when it's done, but that won't be for a while LOL. Essentially, each part of the studio is lit as part of the scene. The black foam core on the ground is not part of the final image, nor is the flag blocking the back light from flaring the lens. The pack and the table of shit is not in the shot, but the hanging rope is, and yes I "styled" it like that. I put the walls in because I think they look cool, can't really think of a better way to say it lol. The floating "cloud" aka the huge canvas flat above the set is inside the crop of the shot, as is the structure of the wall flats. I guess you could say I'm using the studio as a location (literally) instead of trying to white everything out. There's a fantastic set of photos of a green Lamborghini Gallardo that I'm using as inspiration.
There are a LOT of differences, like not having a fucking LAMBORGHINI (or the associated budget for rentals and repairing the cove after painting tire tracks on it) but conceptually mine are not far off. Like I said I'll share more when it's done, right now it's in my head still for the most part, but after importing/backing up... I can see the pieces, and it's gonna be good.
Nate

Looks like a lightbox for cars.
I'm looking for a dedicated monitor. I was going to ask what you use, but I see a laptop. Throw a cardboard box over it outside I guess? hehe
Dunno how Scott gets freaking deer and elk to pose for him yet, either.
