And in the more immediate future, I'm getting really excited. I'm still under the weather but improving every day now.

Im guessing there are quite a few 2 or 3 ticket people.
My guess is close to 10,000 tickets.

Oh, I just noticed that Rickey Gates is doing the 50k distance in the 30k that I'm doing.
Gonna see how long I can keep up with him.

Good night, sweet prince

I've never been more humbled (running wise) than watching an elite fly past me on 40% grade technical trail. It's like a completely different sport at that level

And you're way off on tickets! I'll place my bet on 5,500 tickets or so. Nowhere near 10,000! Don't be pessimistic!

Oh and Gary Gellin, who took 12th at UROC and won way too cool a couple years ago is doing the 30k. Pretty sweet to see guys like that at a relatively small local race.
I think they are using it as prep for TNF 50 since its on the same course.

Got in 10 miles and just under 2k feet this morning. Feeling pretty good. No lingering fatigue or soreness.

I looked his time though and now have serious reservations about mocking a 22:XX Leadville finisher when I'm 0/2 there myself \:\(

Good race. Beautiful day on the coast and perfect temps. The little bit of dipsea that I did left me very fearful of the quad.
That trail is made up of 3 things...rocks, roots and stairs.
felt super good on the hills and decent on the descent even though technical downhill isnt really my thing. I did roll my ankle pretty bad about 5 miles in and its pretty tender now, hoping some ice and rest for a couple days will fix it up.
ended up 4th out of 104 and 2nd in age group. 18 miles and 4800 feet of elevation in 2:49.
Kept up with rickey for the first mile.
That guy is a beast...and not just his running. His shirt and his hat were filthy and he had b.o. before the race had even started.

Oh and I ran with cassie scallon for awhile and ended up beating her by 9 minutes.
I have to admit the first time she passed me I was ok with running behind her.

Damn dude! 4/104 is awesome!!

And no shame in keeping up with Rickey for "only" the first mile haha. So for those of us not in the know, how does this course intersect with Quad Dipsea later this month? Was this all on the Quad course? Partly on it?

And good on your for beating Cassie! I met her at the Mt Werner Classic here in August and she finished so far ahead of me she was all cleaned up and changed by the time I made it in. I thought she was just a Salomon shoe rep since she was manning a table, but then I found out she had run (and finished), then I figured out who she was haha her and Timmy Olson holding it down for Team Wisconsin

In other running news:
  • 2,761 people in the WS lottery, it'll be interesting to see how many get dropped as the WSER crew goes through and verifies qualifiers this week. Sneaky buggers. I'm still guessing ~5,500 tickets this year.
  • Matt Urbanski, who I've mentioned in numerous race reports, ran his first race since finishing up his Triple Crown with the CDT this summer. He was originally signed up for the trail half marathon but training went well and he jumped into the 50K at the last minute and placed 1st with a new course record by 11+ minutes. He's in the WS lottery but focused on placing well at Rocky Raccoon in February. He's had some great races at the 50 mile distance but hasn't had a really strong 100 mile showing yet so he's hoping RR will be the one. (EDIT: just talked to him again, not only did he set the CR at 50K but the marathoners and 50K runners started together and he was the first through the marathon by a good 18 minutes haha. He did the same thing last winter, he ran a 2:58 marathon in 6" of fresh snow and won the half marathon in the process!)
  • I took four days off this week (breaking my fledging 80 day running streak) to get plenty of rest and fluids and I think it helped. I've been feeling better and even got out to run my Emerald loop in a snow storm yesterday. Unfortunately, on the steeper parts of the climb my hamstrings and that damn cyst got really tight and bothersome. That cyst (from Ice Age in May) hasn't been an issue since July so I'm going to see my PT this week and just hope for the best. Nothing left to do but think positive thoughts, keep loose with some shorter runs and get in plenty of stretching.

Keep your fingers crossed for me guys!

The first 4 miles and last 4 miles of my race were on the dipsea. I basically just got to see the stinson Beach side of the trail. It basically put the fear of god in me though. its gonna be brutal.

Is your race next weekend?
Youll be golden man, you put in the time now relax and have fun.
I know easier said than done.

I can't even touch the mileage in here, but I'm pleased to say that I can crank out a couple of 5k's a week without much drama (knock on wood). 5 min walk warmup and 5 min walk cooldown plus post-run stretch and foam roll.

So much easier to do in the cold than cycling. I can sweat balls in mid-30 degree weather where I'd be miserable on the bike. Hoping I can keep it up.

Might add swimming to the mix, too. Town indoor pool is $75 for a 3-month membership.

In this case, slow and steady might actually win the race

I'm doing 10.5-11min/miles (that's with little walking breaks every few minutes tho). If I get to a point where I'm doing low-10/high 9 min/miles, I'll be pretty happy.

Looks like Thanksgiving is going to be sunny (plenty of time for that to change). I ran last Thanksgiving morning and it was awesome smelling the turkeys, fireplaces and leaves. I want to experience that again this year. \:\)

I've heard of Zach Miller, guys a beast (obviously)!

I'll write up a more detailed report now but cliff's notes:

- So much oxygen at 500'! I wasn't breathing heavily the whole day.
- This off and on lung pain came back at on Friday morning so at the start of the race deep breaths really hurt, by the end of the day even shallow breathing hurt. My mom suspects walking pneumonia (it's been 3.5 weeks now) and I'll probably be going to the doctor when I get back to Colorado next week.
- No issues with the cyst, hydration or nutrition - great news!
- Met some great people, including a man finishing his 15th JFK out there.
- Normal soreness this morning but overall feel great - about to get brunch and put down 2,000 calories!

Final result: 9:40:47 and 318th out of 838(?)

Funny bit: I got to the race start just as the gun went off so I was at the very back of the pack and it took 48 seconds to get to the starting line. So start to finish running time was 9:39:59 haha

And I had fantastic crew and support all day - seriously, they were awesome. And my girlfriend paced 35 miles and now appreciates how different that is from running a marathon

Congrats man...sounds like a a great day considering how you're feeling.

Just capped off a 65 mile week with a 12.5 miler after running a mile and a half with the kids at the park. Time to take it easy over the next 5 days to rest up for Dipsea! Driving up to our vacation rental in Bolinas on Wednesday.

I haven't posted in here in a while..man everybody is really getting the miles on on the running!!!

I started with a coach on Nov. 1st, something I'm not really used to. I used to just run when I felt like it and when I got tired just stopped. And I usually went by mileage. He does everything by heart rate, and different zones.

I went from doing about :30-:45mins of running in the morning when I wanted to, to having a full schedule. The first week was pretty easy with about 6:30hrs of training, now almost every week is right around 13-14hrs a week.

It's a lot harder to skip a workout when you have to check in with someone.

I don't think I've ever trained this much before...man I'm always hungry

Congrats guys on finishing - and great times too!

Managed to crank out an 18 miler last Friday. My longest to date. All on a treadmill.
Some guy passed by a couple hours later gawking, "you're still here??"

No not just running, its a combination of running, biking, swimming and a little strength training.

I was gonna say...that's a shitload of running. Tri training....still big numbers but makes a lot more sense. I've peaked at about 18 hours a week leading up to a few IM races. All you want to do is eat and sleep, lol.

Thanks dudes! It was chilly and a bit windy but not really bad at all. I started the race in a 4oz wind jacket but took it off on the 2 mile road section and never put it back on; wearing what you see in the picture the whole race.

May be going to the doctor sooner rather than later this week. Lung pain has only gotten worse and if this is walking pneumonia it looks like they can treat it with antibiotics. It's been hanging around long enough that I feel like I've given the whole "let it work itself thing" an honest effort and am now sick of it

Good news: I thought I missed eligibility for 2014 by running so slow this weekend (9:00hr 50 miler is the A standard) but upon closer inspection my 9/15/12 TNF Madison race will get me one more year at JFK. The qualifier window was "after 9/1/11" this year, so should be "9/1/12" next year. Great news! I have no shame about sneaking in under the wire by 2 weeks haha

Girlfriend is already talking about running it next year with a goal of 7:30 and I'm quite interested in beating her

Yep, pacing me those last 35 miles was her first ultra. And I think it got her more excited to run her own race so she isn't hobbling along while her wretched boyfriend is coughing and shuffling like an old man. She ran a 3:19 at her first and only marathon this summer so I fully believe she could run 7:30 at her first JFK if she decided that was her goal. She's already running 60-65 mile weeks while swamped with grad school.

Of course this lights a tremendous fire under my butt for next year. She asked me what my A, B and C goals were for JFK 2014 and I said "Sub 7, Sub 7:30 and Sub you" haha

And I finally went to Urgent Care today because the lungs aren't getting any better. They suspect it is/was a viral infection and the tissue around my lungs is inflamed as a result. Gave me a prescription for an anti-inflammatory and said if it's not nipped in 72 hours it may be a bacterial infection, but this is unlikely because my breathing sounds fine.

haha thanks dude. It's definitely something to look at pictures from my first race in June 2012 and compare them to later races

but then I realize that despite being stronger, fitter and with more training volume behind me (at altitude no less). I was almost 30 minutes slower on an easier course this weekend.

In fact, that first race (TNF 50 in DC) was muddy, sloppy, etc and that time (9:11) is still my second fastest time for the distance. The one time everything clicked I shaved over 80 minutes off that - but my other 50 milers have all had something go wrong (some excuse, really!) and have been 9:24, 9:40 and 11:26. It's really getting to be frustrating \:\(

San Francisco Running company does group runs on Wednesday nights and usually have a vendor there for you to demo products.
Next week Salomon is going to be there with some of their team thats in town for TNF50.

Per their Facebook invite:
We are super excited to host:
Killian Jornet
Emelie Forsberg (2012 TNF50 Champion)
Miguel Heras (2010 & 2012 TNF50 Champion)
Anna Frost (2010 TNF50 Champion)
Ryan Sandes (2012 Leadville Champion)
Cameron Clayton (2012 3rd place @ TNF50)
Jorge Maravilla (SFRC GM! We think he won a Turkey Trot a couple years ago?)

I think I'll be joining this group run.

Geez - that's an unbelievable group run! Take pictures like a nerd and report back!

My buddy Jeff, from Leadville/Ironman fame, lives in San Francisco now and I'd tell him about this but I know he wouldn't give two shits. We're quite opposite in that respect. He knows nothing about the elite runners in the sport or what races are when. He just enjoys running most days and when he gets an itch he'll find a calendar and register for a race 6 months out, train for it, and do it. Doesn't read iRunFar, doesn't follow any sort of news, etc.

And amps, we were both off on the Western States lottery ticket count!

http://www.wser.org/lottery2014.html

2,715 entrants with 4,316 tickets. 1,700+ people with 1 ticket and only 561 with 2 tickets (I was surprised by this).

6.4% odds with one ticket, roughly 12.5% with two. Eek.
