Yeah, it's blurry, you'll get that at 1/15 handheld (what little sharpness is there is from the fill flash). \:\( Sometimes blur works, which is why I went ahead and did the post on it instead of trashing the raw file, but sometimes it just ruins what could have been a good shot.

*EDIT* I still can't quite write it off.

come spring i think i might get a feeder. there are a lot of birds out back and some really nice cardinals, but they never get close enough.

i like the bird in the background that looks like you caught him with his wings folded in as he dives to the ground

interesting picture. lot of action happening.

I filled up all of my memory cards this morning.

Felt bad for all the birds, so I put two bowls of birdseed on my patio at daybreak. Species of birds showed up that I have never seen before.

I'm usually not a fan of the HDR stuff, but that's the only way I could really get this pic to 'pop'. It was such a cloudy and dreary day, the original RAW file was just blah.

Bill, I like that shot a lot, but whatever plug-in that HDR'd that sort of mussed things up with those halos around the trees. This would've been very easy to make pop in Lightroom with basic adjustments, and simple in Photoshop.

Well from the HDR pic I'd say start by making a better mask around the trees. Then don't go so insane on darkening the sky.

My other gripe is the guy is like oompa loompa orange.

My last biggest gripe is there's a little green patch of grass on the hill that is way too green.

Looking at the original, it wouldn't be bad to work off of. Assuming I used lightroom I'd definitely get more contrast going then just start playing. Up the blacks some maybe depending on what contrast does. In PS, I'd definitely mask the sky perfectly and try and improve it some.

I would use a grad filter across the sky, bringing it down a stop or even two, level it out, and bring up the whole exposure to balance it out.

Just throwing in my $.02: Clearly from the HDR version all the info you need is there in the raw file, it just needs putting together in a gentler way. I don't think LR or just playing with curves is going to get you there though. I'd open the raw file twice. Once balanced for the foreground and once for the sky/background hill and then paste them together as layers. Under the select bar is an option to select by color, and I'd use that to mask around the trees. It's still going to be niggly, leafless branches are a bitch. I remember a teacher saying that there's a really good plug in for tough masking situations, but it costs money so I tuned him out when he was going into details.

It's off. Seems like the photo needs to be rotated 15 degrees, then the guy is already standing up straight... Maybe he is setting the hook?

Yeah, the rule of thumb is that water lines should always be horizontal, but if that makes the fisherman look like he's falling forwards, then I'd skip it. It's one of those things that's best done in the viewfinder before tripping the shutter. To help with that mentally, I have the grid in my viewfinder turned on all the time.

Lone Elk Park by scottspaeth, on Flickr

yearling elk practice to become bulls by pretending to lock antlers and fight. In between bouts they also tore at the ground with their imaginary antlers.

Bull elk #26, "Loppy" watches. Later one of the yearlings tried to play fight with Loppy and got an antler jab to his flank for his foolishness. Being a bull elk is serious business.

The Niagara river is a tricky place to take a photograph. I was either above my buddy or below him when taking pics, you are pretty much standing on a slope the entire time you are fishing.

It's a pain in the fucking ass. All my shots from that day look like that after Mike mentioned it, lol

this one wasn't as easy to do as it looked. i was trying to get the aperture "petals" in focus, and actually wanted to shoot at a lower f-stop. problem is, the lower f-stop you go, the less things become in focus, and to get the petals in focus on anything lower than like F/15 was a major PITA because focusing at the back of the lens is not easy. i got this idea from another forum who's original photographer did an amazing job with it.

can anyone guess the F-stop without looking?

You realize that your blades don't look like that due to the lens you're using and not any lack of effort or talent on your part right?

Yeah man, every lens has what is possibly a different number, shape, or size of aperture or iris blades inside of it.

There's some really weird funky shit out there, and theres normal looking stuff like your 50mm.

The Shape of the blades is what (for the most part) effects the bokeh (the shape and smoothness and consistency of the out of focus elements in an image) of a lens \:\)

I don't know too much about Canons, but are their blades really backwards or is that a composite shot with the guts of the lens photographed from behind?
