I was on the top deck of a cruise ship. The full res version of that pic is MASSIVE. 29,799 x 6,019 , 146 mb.

The right lens for the job is still the way to go, but if you don't have a subject worthy of a photo, it won't matter what equipment you use.

You simply need to get out of the "taking snapshots" phase.

yeah, I hear you. still learning and reading(purchased the understanding exposure book).

You don't really have problems with exposure. It's COMPOSITION that everyone keeps telling you to work on. You're trying too hard to get the technical details right and not hard enough to take an interesting picture.
