Try not to be facing the sun, with that lens you're getting some wicked flare, plus you're standing in the shadow. I think you could have gotten a bit lower with that one as well.. Worlds better then the GoPro shots man, keep at it!

UV filter isn't going to do much of anything, and depending on the build it could just cause worse ghosting/reflections/whatever. A circular polarizer will knock down reflections on surfaces (clearing up some reflections on glass/body panels and allowing color of vegetation etc to show rather then glare) and darken skies that are 90 degrees from the sun. The flare is caused by the sun hitting the lens. Beyond the flare that can also lower contrast in your scene, some lenses will have other effects like CA. I guess... A lens hood will help shield the front element and limit the flare. Since the sun isn't directly in the frame here, I'd bet that a hood, or a well placed hand, would have eliminated the flare in this shot.

There's really nothing to learn with the UV filter, most guys just keep it on there to keep the lens clean. The CPL can be pretty cool.

What software are you using? That lens has some brutal CA (see that rear bar of the roll bar and the purple fringe on the highlight) and LR or Aperture or a number of others can help tone that down.

CA = chromatic aberration, aka blue/cyan and magenta/red fringing around edges in your shots. Usually this shows up where a highlight meets a darker area. Luckily, there is a one click fix in Bridge/Lightroom, and you can adjust further if the out of the box setting doesn't take care of all of it.
Also dude... Snapseed is fine for your iPhone, but you really can't be using that program for anything more serious than quickies.

I forgot my 60d when I caught that giant through the ice, that would have made for some fun pics I'm sure. Once the 100-400 gets here I'll go hunt for some Snowy Owls.
