I gave cross a try last year and it was a blast. It was also the hardest thing I had ever done on a bike. There is no drafting so you just drill it for 45 minutes, and I had pretty much zero off road handling skills going into the season. I plan to do it again this year but with more practice. And I plan to pick up a new bike for it, but haven't decided which one yet.

totally unrelated to the thread but I bought the specialized footbeds that correct your arch today, the measuring thing figured me as blue, not sure if it's placebo or what but I swear riding today felt so much better, I also added the shims to correct inward knee bending.
I also bought some sugoi r+r socks today, god damn they are the best cycling sock I have ever worn, I think i'm going to throw all my others out and buy a bakers dozen of these.

You are one of those people who is basically just passing through on your way to Cat 3.

I hate you.

Shopping for and buying a house has cut into some of my racing. Have a crit on Sunday that I plan on racing in. Then there really isn't a whole lot on the calendar around here for several weeks.

Cat 5 crit today. Was supposed to be 25 minutes plus 5 laps (.9 mile course) but I believe they shortened it. Since my computer had a dead battery I rode without and don't know for sure, nor do I know final pace, distance, etc.

I hung with the pack today but could never really get positioned near the front. Lots of sketchy riding in the corners today on what is a pretty fast course. One corner in particular turned into a small climb. The pack could not ride consistently through that corner - some would slow down while others would try to push through to take some momentum up the hill. One rider crashed late in the race when he took that corner too hot and struck his pedal on the outside curb. I guess that's what I should expect for Cat 5.

Last lap I'm not in position to contest the sprint. There is a long fast straight into the last corner and then a 100-150 yard sprint to the finish line. As you approach and enter that corner you get funneled down from two lanes of road to one. Although the corner is probably a standard 90 degree turn, it feels sharper - you can't take it as fast with the road being narrowed into the corner. Since I wasn't in position to place I saw no need to mix it up in that last corner. I pulled to the outside well ahead of the corner and let everyone else go at it. Turned out that it may have been the right call - a crash in that final turn meant two riders left in an ambulance. Although I didn't see what happened, the aftermath looked pretty ugly - two guys on the ground basically out cold.

I think I'm ready to upgrade to Cat 4 and have the starts. My fitness probably isn't there but I would benefit from riding with faster riders, riding with smoother riders who don't suck so much in the corners, and getting in the Tuesday night B race which is 40ish minutes instead of 25ish minutes in the C race. I do alright in the C races but then I get in a race on the weekends that is 30 minutes plus and run out of gas.

So one of the guys who went down today is in the ICU and unconscious after having surgery to relieve bleeding on or in his brain \:\(

This kind of stuff makes me think about taking up tris instead.

I'm probably going to do that this week. Other than the Tuesday night stuff, there are only a few races left this year that I'll be able to do and they don't have 5 fields. Lowest fields would be 4/5 so I would be racing with 4s anyway.

So, right after making the post above I submitted my Cat 4 upgrade request.

The guy who runs my team happens to be the district rep for USAC who reviews requests.

It got approved in about an hour so I guess I'm a Cat 4

First race as a 4. Tuesday night B race - Cat 4s and Masters. Back to getting dropped all the time

Since its a training race I can jump back in after they come around and I recover. Got dropped twice over the course of a 35ish minute race. Actually, though I don't think my fitness is that far away from being able to keep up. My goal is a good solid month of training, lose a few more pounds, and I think by the first week of August I'll be much stronger.

And I'll definitely be stronger than if I kept doing the C race and training myself to run out of gas in 20-25 minutes

I have a 8 hour cross country race in a few weeks and haven't really put much saddle time in on the trails, most longer rides have been road. Figured I should start doing more distance off road.
Went to michigan today and rode highlands. Did 25.6 miles, 1340' elevation all technical singletrack, total time of 2:45. I don't want to see another switchback for awhile, I think I wore out my rear shifter.

I ordered a new wheel set and wondering what size cassette I should go with. It'll be going on my Tri bike. I have a 12-25 on it now. We have some decent hills here, but I rarely feel like I need to shift one more time to get to the top. So I'm not sure if I would benefit from a 12-27.

What sizes are you guys running?

Would I notice a big speed difference with a 11-25?

I have an 11-28 and a compact crank on my road bike. I know - I'm a giant pussy. Its just what it came with and I never got around to changing anything.

I guess the question would be even if you don't need the 27, would you benefit from having it there on your easy days. If you don't need it, skip it in favor of having the closer sprocket sizes. It looks like the difference is in the last two rings - you would go 21, 23, 25 or 21, 24, 27.

Showed up for race last night. Pinned on my number, got out my bike, pumping up my tires and it starts pouring.

Get back in the car for a few minutes and it doesn't let up. Put wet bike back in the car, dry it off at home, and do intervals on the trainer.

Other than hitting a couple of more Tuesday night races I do not have any real racing on the calendar until Labor Day weekend. Then the MS150 and then cross.

3 hour round trip drive to go mountain biking today, did about 15 minutes of riding 1 hour of hike a bike. Wheel just folded over, never been so mad in my life, I was so upset on the drive back to Canadar I was road raging at people who were driving well above the speed limit.
On the way home I stopped at my LBS to order a new rim and figured while I was there I deservered a pair of specialized sworks mtb shoes for my troubles, a little gift to myself just to say "thanks for being so awesome".

Well now that i'm home time to grab the other bike and head out, not even in the mood though, just want to smash beers. I think i'm just going to skip my 8 hour race next weekend.

Something very similar happened to me last weekend.

Signed up in June and paid the registration fee for the Tour de Donut being held about 50 miles away. Pack, drive to the start, put together my bike, pick up my number and go back to my car. I'm standing there getting ready when I hear someone a couple of cars back say he can't ride and has to go home because he forgot his shoes. I stop what I'm doing and think for a minute ... shoes ... hmmm ... FUCK! My shoes are sitting on the floor at home and I'm wearing flip flops. I think for a moment about riding anyway, but probably not safe with 1100 other cyclists on the road.

Road rage all the way back home.

Pretty cool - how did that end up in your lap?

I've not done squat for about a month now - two training crits and a time trial since July 1. Work travel, buying a house, preparing to move and preparing to rent out the current place have all taken priority.

In addition, in a race I was in at the end of June, I guy went down hard and suffered a very severe head injury. He has not recovered and is not going to recover - they are moving him to hospice and going to end life support soon. \:\( Its kind of spooked me and my wife, who never liked me racing anyway, really doesn't like it now.

I'm probably done until cross season starts since my fitness has gone to shit.
