That thumbnail looks the best in the set. April and May look interesting too.
I can not wait until summer is over. Even this dragonfly looked depressed the other day when it was 106 or so. Not sure why it chose the pavement over grass? Had to be really hot.

The pic doesn't bother me in the least. It's too small to tell if out of focus or not, but it looks fine in that size to me.

In the interest of not being as harsh (do I have to do that? Is this still Sparta/CSI?) Let me rephrase: The lighting could use some work, the composition is uninspired, and the location is very dull.

You'll do fine, Hoss. People only really get into trouble when they start fucking around with auxiliary lighting and have absolutely no idea how to use it effectively or properly (aka the shot you posted)
Do what you know, don't "practice" on this shoot. If you are worried about anything not working out, do the "safe" shots first and then try the crazy stuff. That way, worst case scenario you still have your bases covered.

Making cars look good, while not really looking "lit" is very hard, but that's the direction I have been trying to move towards lately. Joe McNally has some very fantastic shots that follow that same general guideline, but also a good amount of his stuff is very obviously lit... And being obviously lit is not a "good" or "bad" thing, its purely a stylistic choice. Coincidentally, I happen like his obviously lit photos more.
