bah, I bought a makita and just went slowly with it when learning. I also learned on my own car which is my pride and joy. Two things to look out for: 1. You hold it in the same place too long, it will get too hot and burn the paint. 2. If you use a really aggressive type of a pad or product you will wear away all the clear coat within time. I learned much more clear coat exists then you think though.
So just keep moving it around and don't use a harsh cutting product when learning. I polished my old civic countless times and have never experienced any kind of problems. Rotary is faster, easier and more effective then any random orbital. I hate swirl marks and have always been able to easily get rid of them.
