For the people who have HID Kits/ Retrofits in your cars. Lets try and make this into a center of HID info. I know there are numerous people on here who have Kits, and others who have gone the retrofit route. If you wouldnt mind, post pics of your lights, and a cutoff. I know there are other threads, but if we can consolidate all of those into one, thatd help clean things up a bit. Also, give any information. Where you got it, what projectors youre using, how much it cost you, how hard install was, etc.

Lets see em!

Alright, i'll start first....

Audi A6 Bixenon projectors (They have high and low beams)
Bixenon projectors have little shields in them that will lift up to let more light shine thru for the high beams.
4300k Phillips Bulbs (D2S)
D2S bulbs are used in projectors. D2R bulbs are used in regular headlights, and they have this "shield" on top of the bulb that kinda sorta stops light from shining up too high, but it doesnt work all that well.
Hella ballasts, and random HID Wiring/Harnesses

The kit for all of these items costs about $500 or so last time I checked.

This isnt one of the greatest pics but it shows the projector nicely. Its really old and i have since then re-done some stuff on it.

Here's a crappy pic i took while we were doing it with my camera phone.

Close up, OEM Honda Stanley!!!!

At night shots:

Daytime pics

And for anyone seriously considering doing this, i'd read and read and read on this site: www.hidplanet.com

Nice pictures! Thanks for sharing.

I now know that our stock headlights aren't meant for HID's. However, can you still do retrofit and cut-off on them anyways? Or does it really "have to be" a projector headlight?

I'm not quite sure i understand what you're trying to say. "Retrofitting" a projector into our headlights is the only way to get a good cut-off line.

Here is my setup. These are old pics from fall and have since then made some changes, so I will post up some new ones after I fix them here shortly. I blew an ignitor.

Anywho, my setup is as follows:

2005 Acura TL Bi-xenon projectors, lightly modded to get more color at cutoff and more foreground light.
Matsushita GEN 1 Ballasts and Ignitors from an Infiniti RX330
Various wiring, connectors, and relays for custom harness

The shroud/bezel of each projector is made from PVC and raw aluminum. And NO, those are NOT angel eyes around each projector. That is the chrome ring that holds the projector lens to the body of each projector.

Well, these are the pics for now, I will add some others including pics of the build itself later on.

hey there! will it help if you tilt the stock headlight down a bit? in order not to blind any oncoming traffic with the glare from the HID. or maybe change the bulb to 4000k? just so it's not as harsh.

You can aim them down, but they'll still get glare. So no, that wont help. And 4000k is brighter than 6000k or 8000k, so that wouldnt do much either. If you want HID's, do it the *right* way and retrofit

Agreed. If you look at Civic4drnw pictures of the cutoff line, and see that they are practically straight across, thats what you want. And you can only get that, for our cars, through retrofitting. There is no plug and play kit, no amount of headlight tweaking, etc, that will get your cutoff line to look like that.

I guess I'll play.

1st retro I did:

Setup:
2x OEM 96-98 Honda Civic Headlights
2x OEM Honda S2000 Projectors
2x OEM Audi A4 Bezels
2x OEM Nissan/Matsushita Ballasts
2x OEM Phillips 85122 4100k/4300k D2S bulbs
1x Custom wiring harness

Part list + Labor =

Output:

I know there's some glare, but very little, and it's all from the overwhelming amount of "CHROME" everywhere in my headlights.

Sold that entire retro, couldn't stay away from HID's (cause im such a HIDwhore) I bought this retro from a friend (98civic on this forum) Ripped it apart and redid the housings and bezels, bought new ballasts and bulbs and viola.

2nd retro:

Setup:
2x OEM 96-98 Honda Civic Headlights (Painted gunmetal)
2x OEM Audi RS6 Bi-Xenon Projectors
2x OEM Audi/BMW HELLA GEN3 ballasts
2x OEM Phillips 85122 4100k/4300k D2S bulbs
1x Custom wiring harness

No output shots yet just these 2 pictures

Not as bright as the s2000 projectors, but the high beam is AWESOME haha. Sitting and waiting for a new set of projectors to start my 3rd retrofit , and hopefully it'll be my last.

Nice retrofits.

I'm doing a projector retrofit in a little bit, got my Audi projectors, need some other parts.

However, I had a set of HIDs from an Acura TL and I did a quick rebased to fit my Accord with 9004 headlights. I've sold the car and kept the HIDs. How much different is our 9003 vs the 9004 base? I was wondering if I had to redo it completely or just modify it a little bit.

i really enjoy the color of the light but im unhappy with the glare.
i would like to go the *right* way and go with a retrofit.
what do i need to buy?
where can i buy it?
how much will it cost?
how hard is install?
im sorry its obvious i am a noob but i would like to do things properly and make it look as nice as possible.
I don't care about hi-beams, i just want a single beam.
thanks any help given!

don't see too many people running phillips ballasts. I had cheap chinese ones, and one of them stopped working, so I bought phillips, and good luck so far. made my own hid fog lights, too. having trouble with the wiring, will probably need to build a harness for them...

The output of these retrofits looks great, but frankly the lights themselves look a little too hacked up for my taste.

Call me a ricer, but rather than cutting the back off the OEM lights, what are everyone's thoughts on starting with a set of ebay projector lights, then doing something like a TSX projector swap into those housings (since their lights undoubtedly suck). I was "browsing" out on ebay and honestly these things don't look that bad, although I wish they didn't all insist on using angel eyes. Again, I'm talking about retrofitting into these housings. Nice or rice?

examples of ebay proj housings:

I know its been a while since people posted on this thread... But its a reply to those two "ebay projectors." The top picture is a TYC headlight-Which aren't too cheap and they are SO easy to retro into. Especially with Valeos. If someone was interested in Retrofitting I would use the TYC headlamps and get the Valeo Projectors-easiest way. TYC's look a lot better than you think and they also come in "chrome" so you're not forced to getting the flat black headlamps.

Granted they dont look awful, but the masses still consider them to be rice. And I still prefer the "hacked up" look of a retrofit to those.

$1k is way too much. And HID fogs are worthless.

Contrary to popular belief, there is a such thing as 'too much light', even from a drivers perspective. High levels of foreground light give the illusion, the subjective impression, of comfort and security and "good lighting". This is one of the same reasons that OEM manufacturers never use HID foglights (poor CRI of HID bulbs being the other main reason).

In clear conditions, more foreground light is not a good thing, it's a bad thing. Some foreground light is necessary so you can use your peripheral vision to see where you are relative to the road edges, the lane markings etc. But foreground light is far less safety-critical than light cast well down the road into the distance, because at any significant speed (much above 30 mph), what's in the foreground is too close for you to do much about. If you increase the foreground light, your pupils react to the bright, wide pool of light by constricting, which in turn substantially reduces your distance vision—especially since there's no increase in down-the-road distance light to go along with the increased foreground light.

US-DOT headlamps have arguably inadequate levels of light in the foreground and to the sides. Many US DOT headlamps have what seems to be a "black hole" in front of the car, with essentially the entire beam concentrated in a narrow band or ball of light thrown into the distance. This problem gets overcorrected many times by an abundant HID light source and we have all this extra light to work with. Where are you going to put the extra light? You can put some of it into the "hot spot" to improve distance vision, but you can't put too much of it there, because you'll glare other drivers (and exceed regulated maximum intensities). You can spread some of it around in the rest of the beam, but there are often even stricter maxima outside of the hot spot or zone, and too much "generalized" light causes veiling glare and backdazzle in bad weather. So they put a lot of it in the foreground. But over a certain level, which is quite easy to exceed with an HID headlamp, undesireable things start to happen. You sacrifice distance vision, you get high levels of reflected-light glare on wet roads, that sort of thing.

i would NEVER IN MY LIFE get HID headlights. I think there the most dangerous and annoying thing on the road. Who on here has had experiences like mine in which a car behind you(usually an SUV) has HID lights that hit your side view mirror and you cant see anything at night. Very dangerous and very annoying.

HID foglights I think are awesome. Its a sick look for your car and the light dosent penetrate anyones vision.

Id love to share a pic of my 1993 Civic Hatchback(RIP) with my HID fogs(3k)with my high beams on

Has anyone tried retrofitting a 96-00 civic with a complete S2000 setup?

Search Honda-tech for that. I know the S2k has one of the best hid setups in any production car. The ONLY thing I dont much care for is that they're not bi-xenon. Which means the high beam is not HID.

I know a few people with S2000 projectors retrofitted into their headlights.
I'd just go with the TSX projectors due to similar output and lower price.
